Handheld announces continued availability of Windows Embedded Handheld (WEH)
[Lidköping, Sweden, May 21, 2019.] Handheld Group, a leading manufacturer of rugged mobile computers, today emphasized that it will continue producing and supporting the NAUTIZ X8 ultra-rugged handheld computer that operates on the Windows Embedded Handheld (WEH) operating system. The NAUTIZ X8 rugged handheld is designed for tough environments and runs WEH 6.5.
Microsoft’s announcement that it will discontinue support for WEH in January 2020 has implications for companies which have invested in Windows-based handheld computers, and those who have configured customized software for the operating system. Handheld has committed availability of the Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 OS on the Nautiz X8 until at least the end of 2021, continuing to be a resource for the many companies who still require it. This allows current Nautiz X8 users to supplement their inventory with complementary products for several years, even beyond Microsoft’s end-of-service date. Warranty and customer support for the WEH products will be continued as usual by Handheld.
“Consumer devices may change every few months, but we know how important consistency and long-term support are for our business customers and partners,” says Johan Hed, Handheld director of product management. “They need solid, long-term options, because it can be expensive and time-consuming for organizations to switch platforms. Our commitment to support WEH means customers can rely on us to provide a longer useful life for our Nautiz X8 rugged handheld.”
